When Dr. Stockmann realizes the town’s springs—a major source of income for the community—are severely contaminated, he alerts the authorities. Urged to keep quiet for the good of the town, he must decide whether or not the truth is worth fighting for, especially when it means going against the majority.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

“All truth is God’s truth” is a phrase I first encountered at Northwestern, and I was surprised by the way that simple phrase stopped me in my tracks. I see an echo of this phrase in Northwestern’s mission to live and learn courageously and faithfully. I love both of these statements; in them I hear a bold and perhaps foolish call. For if I learn the truth, and I know that truth is God’s, then I must ask the question: what is God’s truth worth to me? As a Christian, I think my only answer can be a clear and resounding “everything.”

An Enemy of the People wrestles with the question: what is the truth worth? We see the various characters give different answers, and in their answers, we have the opportunity to reflect on their choices. Brazilian dramatist Augusto Boal said, “It is not the place of the theatre to show the correct path, but only to offer the means by which all possible paths may be examined.” May we examine the paths offered to us in this work.
