Northwestern College’s “theatre with a difference” is an authentic ensemble approach where every role— from actor to sound designer to stage manager—is valued. Our goal is to serve our audiences with the kind of excellence that regularly earns our students critical acclaim as actors, designers and playwrights. More importantly, excellence honors God. That philosophy underlies all the teaching and learning we do at Northwestern, including what happens on stage and behind the scenes.

Celebrating 100 Years of Theatre

In 1923, Northwestern Academy students put on the first recorded performance after delaying the production following an outbreak of smallpox. It was a small play called The Gold Bug. 100 years later, we celebrate the many students, professors, and staff who have graced the stages which the Northwestern Theatre Department has called home.

Visit The Passage

In the fall of 2021, an intrepid workstudy student uncovered this happy discovery which led us to scour the Northwestern Library archives for theatre images and programs; coalescing them into a series of posters celebrating a century of faithful work and beautiful artistry by the men and women who came before us.

We invite you to explore the history of Northwestern Theatre. Take the elevator in the lobby to the second floor and journey through The Passage.

We are deeply grateful to the Theatre Patrons who funded this project and who have joyfully supported our department for decades.
