DIRECTOR’S NOTE

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s classic novella has delighted readers and audiences since it was first published in 1943 and has been translated into over 300 languages and adapted into a wide variety of media, including theatre, film, graphic novels, opera, and ballet.

On the surface, The Little Prince tells the story of an aviator who crashes in the vast and unforgiving Sahara Desert and encounters a strange young traveler, seemingly from outer space. As the young prince tells us the story of their travels, we get the opportunity to see the world through a child’s eyes. It’s a chance to forget everything that we’ve been told is important and be reminded that “it is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.”

As I spend time with this story, I find myself dwelling on the words of Jesus from Luke 18:17: “Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” I believe that this story can help us remember how to hold on to a childlike faith—one that embraces wonder, trust, love, and the ability to perceive the truths that are beyond what the eye can see.
