Round of Applause

A Focus Warmup

When to use this warmup

"Round of Applause" is a lively and engaging acting game designed to boost energy, build camaraderie, and enhance participants' responsiveness and coordination.

Here’s how to play:

Objective

Participants work together to create a coordinated round of applause, responding quickly to changes in rhythm and volume, and fostering a sense of unity.

Instructions

  1. Gather Participants: Have the group stand in a circle so everyone can see and hear each other clearly.

  2. Explain the Game:

    • The aim is to create a synchronized round of applause, responding to changes in tempo and volume as directed by a leader.

  3. Choose a Leader:

    • Select one participant to be the leader. The leader's role is to set the rhythm and volume of the applause, which the rest of the group will follow.

  4. Starting the Applause:

    • The leader begins by clapping at a steady pace and volume.

    • The rest of the group joins in, matching the leader’s rhythm and intensity.

  5. Changing the Rhythm and Volume:

    • The leader can change the speed (faster or slower) and volume (louder or softer) of the clapping at any time.

    • The group must stay alert and adjust their applause to match the leader’s changes promptly.

  6. Following Cues:

    • The leader might introduce various cues, such as:

      • Pause: The leader raises both hands, signaling the group to stop clapping instantly.

      • Resume: The leader starts clapping again, and the group follows.

      • Speed Up: The leader increases the tempo, and the group must clap faster.

      • Slow Down: The leader decreases the tempo, and the group must clap slower.

      • Volume Up: The leader claps louder, and the group follows suit.

      • Volume Down: The leader claps softer, and the group mimics the change.

  7. Rotating Leaders:

    • After a few minutes, choose a new leader to give different participants a chance to lead.

    • Continue the game, allowing several participants to experience being the leader.

  8. Ending the Game:

    • Conclude the game after everyone who wants to be a leader has had a turn, or after a set amount of time.

    • Finish with a final coordinated applause, celebrating the group's teamwork and responsiveness.

Tips for Success

  • Encourage Focus: Remind participants to pay close attention to the leader’s cues.

  • Promote Enthusiasm: Foster a lively and energetic atmosphere to keep the game fun and engaging.

  • Practice Unity: Emphasize the importance of working together and responding as a cohesive group.

  • Support New Leaders: Encourage and support participants who are leading for the first time, ensuring they feel confident and valued.

Variations

  • Silent Applause: Introduce a version where the group mimics clapping motions without making any sound, focusing on the visual rhythm.

  • Patterned Applause: The leader introduces specific clapping patterns (e.g., clap twice, pause, clap once) for the group to follow.

  • Themed Applause: Incorporate themes (e.g., celebratory, rhythmic, mimicking different types of applause from various events) to add variety and creativity.

"Round of Applause" is an excellent warmup game that energizes participants, hones their ability to follow cues, and strengthens group coordination and unity.
